Department of Labor Announces New Summer Program

ATLANTA – State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond announced today that the Georgia Department of Labor's 2010 Summer Internship Program will offer internships to students across the state. The internship program provides college students with practical work experience, an opportunity to earn school credit, and a chance to make up to $1,400 through the program.

“In a time when countless companies have cut jobs, including paid internships, the Summer Internship Program provides valuable opportunities for students to develop and expand skills and to earn money,” said Commissioner Thurmond.

Interns work 25 hours per week for nine weeks between June 1 and August 13, and are paid semi-monthly. The program is open primarily to college sophomores, juniors and seniors in Georgia. It is also open to Georgia residents enrolled in or accepted to similar institutions in other states.

School credits may be earned, but interns are responsible for making arrangements with their respective institutions to obtain the credit. Interns will be selected on the basis of the following: student interests and whether such interests align with possible job duties at the labor department, maturity level, and student access to Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) Career Centers and Vocational Rehabilitation offices around the state. Whenever possible, selected interns will be allowed to choose the office where they will work.

Applicants must submit an application, along with a one-page essay on “The key to my employment success in the next five to 10 years.” They may also be required to complete a job interview conducted by a member of the department's staff. Applications are available at any GDOL office, the department’s Web site, www.dol.state.ga.us, and by writing to Janice Reaves Jackson, Director of Marketing & Community Relations, Georgia Department of Labor, Suite 600, 148 Andrew Young International Blvd., N. Applications will be accepted from March 1 through March 31. Applications should be mailed to Mrs. Reaves Jackson at the above address, or faxed to (404) 656-2683. Selections will be made by April 21, and students selected for the internship program will be notified via mail between April 26th and the 30th.

Commissioner Thurmond announces Oct. 28 application deadline for DUA

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that workers in nine Georgia counties – Bartow, Catoosa, Coweta, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Heard, Newton, and Rockdale -- have until Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, to file initial claims for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) to compensate for loss of income directly resulting from the severe storms and flooding beginning on Sept. 18, 2009, and continuing.

DUA is a federal program established to help workers whose primary income is lost or interrupted as a direct result of a disaster declared by the President. Federal DUA differs from the state’s regular unemployment insurance program in that it provides benefits to self-employed business people, farmers, diversified farming operations, loggers, commission paid employees and others who are not eligible for Georgia’s regular unemployment insurance benefits. The maximum weekly benefits amount is $330.

In applying for benefits, applicants will need to provide their social security number. Self-employed applicants should be prepared to provide information related to their previous year's earnings, such as income tax forms or quarterly estimated income tax records.

Under certain circumstances, DUA benefits also may be available to family members who become the primary breadwinners of households where the head of that household died as a direct result of the disaster. Proof of the death of the head of household, such as a death certificate or affidavit, should be presented at the time the claim is filed.

Federal DUA differs from the state’s regular unemployment insurance program in that it provides benefits to self-employed business people, farmers, diversified farming operations, loggers, commission paid employees and others who are not eligible for Georgia’s regular unemployment insurance benefits. The maximum weekly benefits amount is $330.
