Using Social Media To Land that JOB!

Social media websites are popular for promoting events and businesses and is also used as an important networking tool amongst different entertainment and career based industries. Because of this access to a large number of influential people, the unemployed and employed alike are using social media to search for and land their next big gig.

On the latest At Work show, we discussed the do's and don't s of using social media and listened to successful social media users give advice and ideas on how to increase your chances of landing the job you want, through the world of "friending" and "following," on websites like Linkedin and Facebook.

1. Completely fill out your profile.
Give as much (good) information about your skills and talents as you can, to attract that potential employer. Make them interested in you.

2. Ask colleagues and industry peers to write a recommendation for you.
Recommendations from others that have worked along side you gives a future employer an idea of what to expect from you if you decide to work for them.

3. Have credible references listed on your profile. People that have a background in your industry or presently work in that industry have knowledge about the kind of job you are seeking and therefore can give a more accurate account of your qualifications for a specfic position. And of course, past fellow employees know your work habits. (Be sure this person is someone who LIKES you.)

4. Become a member of a few industry groups that are available on that social media site.
Join the conversations in these groups and on these forums. Your input may catch the eye of someone seeking a new expert in their company.

5. Write a good headline and job title on your profile to get the attention of a potential employer.
You want to JUMP off the screen. It's a possibility that there are hundreds and even thousands of people who have the same industry experience as you. A great profile headline separates you from the rest.

Department of Labor Announces New Summer Program

ATLANTA – State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond announced today that the Georgia Department of Labor's 2010 Summer Internship Program will offer internships to students across the state. The internship program provides college students with practical work experience, an opportunity to earn school credit, and a chance to make up to $1,400 through the program.
(THIS PROGRAM IS UNRELATED TO GPB'S INTERN PROGRAM)

“In a time when countless companies have cut jobs, including paid internships, the Summer Internship Program provides valuable opportunities for students to develop and expand skills and to earn money,” said Commissioner Thurmond.

Interns work 25 hours per week for nine weeks between June 1 and August 13, and are paid semi-monthly. The program is open primarily to college sophomores, juniors and seniors in Georgia. It is also open to Georgia residents enrolled in or accepted to similar institutions in other states.

School credits may be earned, but interns are responsible for making arrangements with their respective institutions to obtain the credit. Interns will be selected on the basis of the following: student interests and whether such interests align with possible job duties at the labor department, maturity level, and student access to Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) Career Centers and Vocational Rehabilitation offices around the state. Whenever possible, selected interns will be allowed to choose the office where they will work.

Applicants must submit an application, along with a one-page essay on “The key to my employment success in the next five to 10 years.” They may also be required to complete a job interview conducted by a member of the department's staff. Applications are available at any GDOL office, the department’s Web site, www.dol.state.ga.us, and by writing to Janice Reaves Jackson, Director of Marketing & Community Relations, Georgia Department of Labor, Suite 600, 148 Andrew Young International Blvd., N. E., Atlanta, GA 30303-1751.

Applications will be accepted from March 1 through March 31. Applications should be mailed to Mrs. Reaves Jackson at the above address, or faxed to (404) 656-2683. Selections will be made by April 21, and students selected for the internship program will be notified via mail between April 26th and the 30th.

Judi is a Hurricane Katrina survivor and started this new business venture after losing her horse farm. Two more hurricanes brushed through, re-arranged her life and caused her to re-open her shop more than once.

Thus re-wiring the name and purpose of her consignment business.

Commissioner Thurmond announces Oct. 28 application deadline for DUA

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that workers in nine Georgia counties – Bartow, Catoosa, Coweta, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Heard, Newton, and Rockdale -- have until Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, to file initial claims for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) to compensate for loss of income directly resulting from the severe storms and flooding beginning on Sept. 18, 2009, and continuing.

DUA is a federal program established to help workers whose primary income is lost or interrupted as a direct result of a disaster declared by the President. Federal DUA differs from the state’s regular unemployment insurance program in that it provides benefits to self-employed business people, farmers, diversified farming operations, loggers, commission paid employees and others who are not eligible for Georgia’s regular unemployment insurance benefits. The maximum weekly benefits amount is $330.

In applying for benefits, applicants will need to provide their social security number. Self-employed applicants should be prepared to provide information related to their previous year's earnings, such as income tax forms or quarterly estimated income tax records.

Under certain circumstances, DUA benefits also may be available to family members who become the primary breadwinners of households where the head of that household died as a direct result of the disaster. Proof of the death of the head of household, such as a death certificate or affidavit, should be presented at the time the claim is filed.

Potentially eligible workers should contact the nearest Georgia Department of Labor office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Workers may call the Georgia Department of Labor’s toll-free customer service line at (877) 709-8185 to obtain career center information.

5 Tips for Mompreneurs

1. Start with a clear vision

For a vision to be compelling and inspiring, it needs to be more than just a list of things you are going to accomplish. For a rich vision to move you it must be about what you’ll do – and who you’ll be – and how you’ll impact others’ lives.

2. Have a plan that works for you

The idea of a traditional business plan can be intimidating. What’s key is that you’re clear about your goals, that you have them on paper, and that you have a timeline in which to accomplish those goals. The plan and the timeline will undoubtedly change, but having a timeline and a taskline will keep you moving forward.

3. Create a success support team

Ask for help. Delegate whenever possible. Even if you are bootstrapping, be alert to “partnering your weaknesses”—barter, trade, negotiate – get creative in outsourcing those tasks in your business that don’t require your unique talents.

4. Make self-care part of your business plan

Balancing business and family responsibilities requires that you treat self-care like any other business essential. Set boundaries with both the business and with you family. Have “office hours” for yourself (even if they are anything but “regular”) and stick to them. Schedule self-care “meetings” with yourself and honor those commitments.

5. Find a community of support

Don’t try to go it alone. Women seek a nurturing environment whether with family or friends and leverage relationships in a way that makes sense and moves people forward. Using your natural connecting abilities, and find a supportive environment, either online, in-person, or both.

Launching and Growing a Business during an Economic Downturn

In spite of troubling economic times, launching or expanding your business doesn’t have to be out of reach. Here are five tips to consider when making your decision to start or grow your business:

Organic approach. Connecting with like-minded entrepreneurs and offering to exchange services to help each other’s businesses grow is a popular and effective strategy in launching on bootstrap budget. That is why it is so important to have professional organizations where you can meet and connect for support, tools and resources.

Side Launching. Transitioning from your full time job into your business is often a more comfortable starting point for entrepreneurs. Use evenings and weekends to start slowly on the side of your full-time job. This will give you the chance to measure success and determine whether your idea is truly viable before committing to it full-time.

Online Distribution of your product or service is often a more affordable entry point for those launching businesses. It reduces the costs of the traditional brick and mortar store fronts and allows for global accessibility to products immediately

Technology has changed the scope of how anyone can do business. Blackberries and Wireless Internet have made working from home or even the carpool line an acceptable method of doing business.

Investing in startup instead of stock market. It is possible taking a chance on starting a business or investing in a person you trust starting a business in some ways feels safer to those who are scared of the stock market right now.

Tax Free Money For Georgia Vets

During job training, a newly hired veteran employee, if eligible, can receive up to $13,212 tax-free supplemental income from his GI Bill during a two-year, experience-based training program.

National Guardsmen and reservists may also be eligible if they are currently under a six-year contract or qualify for the Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP) by having been called to active duty for at least 90 consecutive days since September 11, 2001.

Also eligible to apply for OJT/Apprenticeship benefits are the spouse and dependents of a veteran with a 100% VA disability rating.

There are no direct payments to the employer. Payments are made directly to the veteran and are intended to serve as a salary supplement during the training period.

To use GI Bill benefits while enrolled in an on-the-job-training (OJT) or apprenticeship program (APP), a veteran must work 30 hours or more, full time employment, during the workweek and the employer must agree to establish the program. Approved training programs are evaluated annually by SAA representatives to determine their initial and continued compliance with the federal regulations.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance Program

State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that workers in two Georgia counties – Baker and Early -- have until Friday, July 24, 2009, to file initial claims for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits to compensate for loss of income, directly resulting from severe storms and tornadoes, which struck the area on March 26, 2009.

Federal DUA differs from the state’s regular unemployment insurance program in that it provides benefits to self-employed business people, farmers, diversified farming operations, loggers, commission paid employees and others who are not eligible for Georgia’s regular unemployment insurance benefits. The maximum weekly benefits amount is $330.

Potentially eligible workers should contact the nearest Georgia Department of Labor office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Workers may call the Georgia Department of Labor’s toll-free customer service line at (877) 709-8185 to obtain career center information

Handling Conflict At Work

As with any other place of human interaction, conflict is bound to occur at work. Whether its as trivial as not replenishing the coffee pot or arriving late to work, these issues must be addressed before they snowball in to all out "Cubicle Clashes."

Most issues in the work place can be solved with lessons learned years ago in the sandbox such as, playing nice with others, or waiting your turn. Womenwork.org has a few tips for working through office discrepencies:

If a conflict is between you and just one other person, try to work it out between the two of you, rather than bringing others into the conflict.

In a workplace, everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Treat others the way you want to be treated, and don’t put people down.

Give credit where credit is due; if someone has helped you on a project or proposal, make sure others are aware that the person deserves credit for helping.

How's Your Campaign Going?

You may not have to deal with photo shopped pictures of yourself on the internet like Sarah Palin, but your own "brand" is just as important as any politicians. With social networks and blogs abound, an employer simply needs your name to potentially view all of your activity on line. This can be particularly dire for young professionals as they transition from student life to that of a working adult. Embarrassing photos or generally unsavory information will turn off an employer, no matter how well the interview went. The best solution for this problem is to avoid it altogether.

Individuals that are particularly web savvy can take this situation and make it an asset by creating a blog or some other online content the positively reflects them in the eyes of employers. For instance, an aspiring music critic might start a blog about popular music with album reviews and industry news. This approach can also work wonders for entrepreneurs. A photographer blogging about photos they have taken has potential exposure to millions of possible clients on line compared to paying for ad space and reaching only a few thousand pairs of eyes.

Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

Weekend Warriors can shout TGIF a little louder this week with the extended weekend that Labor Day affords. According to the official U.S. Department of Labor website:

The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

Some of us aren't "social butterflies," so it can be difficult just to speak with people we don't know. Here's a few helpful tips from the good folks over at Business Pundit:

Do cool things.
Introverts typically don’t like to talk about themselves - we prefer to talk about ideas. Force yourself to discuss some of the things you’ve done. Don’t brag, make sure they are relevant to the conversation. Then the extroverts can talk about you and pass your achievements along. It gives you credibility in some circles. Yes, I realize you would rather be accepted for what you think and know, but the truth is that the world measures you by what you do.

Go regularly to things you like.
When I was living on the Space Coast, I went to a group called Founders Forum. It was for entrepreneurs and investors. I learned a lot at the meetings, but it took about 6 months for people to start recognizing me and saying hi. It was uncomfortable, being 23 in a room of mostly middle aged people. You just have to keep showing up, month after month.

Georgia Public Broadcasting’s Live Monthly Consumer Call-in returns to GPB Radio on Friday, July 11 at 3 PM. For over a decade, the program has provided a valuable service to listeners. The program will be hosted by Award-Winning GPB Reporter Valarie Edwards, who will conduct interviews, take listener calls and offer consumer tips.

Dealing With Vacations At Work

It’s the beginning of summer vacation time, which means that many employees will be preparing for their summer vacations. Many of you will also be helping your co-workers with their workloads while they are out.

In today’s “flat organizations,” where most people work in teams, vacation planning has become a large-group affair and results in time-off traffic jams. Some 59% of workers have to coordinate their vacations with co-workers before they go, says a recent survey of 1,015 full-time workers by Harris Interactive for Kronos, a workforce management concern. And more than one in five say their vacation requests have been denied because a co-worker had already asked for the same time. This may be one reason more than half of U.S. workers fail to use all their vacation days each year, says a 2007 study of 1,082 workers by Hudson Highland Group.
